bulletin board The Navesink Garden Club, Red Bank, celebrating its 55th anniversary this year, has announced it recently received a grant from Protect the Environment Through Action, Learning and Service (Petals). The grant will be used along with funds raised by the club to support the horticultural therapy outdoor program at King James Care Center, Atlantic Highlands. The club began work in 2001 in addition to its indoor therapy program begun in 1960. The program is co-sponsored by National Garden Clubs Inc., and Shell Oil Company. It supports and encourages garden clubs nationwide to address local environmental issues through projects that promote conservation, beautification and community improvement. Sign-up for ‘Fair Haven Fields’ slated March 17 Sign-up for the "Fair Haven Fields" community garden will be March 17 from 10 a.m. to noon, at Bicentennial Hall, Cedar Avenue, Fair Haven. Tickets now available for ‘Death by Democracy’ Tickets are now available for a "Death by Democracy," a murder mystery dinner to be hosted by The Monmouth County Historical Association (MCHA) April 27 from 6-10 p.m. The event will be at the Taylor-Butler House, 127 Kings Highway, Middletown, one of five historic houses owned and maintained by the association. Tickets are $85, with proceeds benefiting the association’s preservation of historic properties. The event will feature roasted leg of lamb or herb chicken, catered by 75 South, Freehold, and a cash bar. Beadwork now displayed at Oceanic Free Library Oceanic Free Library, Avenue-of-Two-Rivers, Rumson, is currently displaying beadwork by Marty Beaton, president of the Bead Society of New Jersey. Beaton is involved with designing teaching pieces in basic beading techniques. She now teaches at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown; The Birds and the Beads, Colts Neck; and at Bead Society workshops. Beaton’s work will also be exhibited and sold at the Monmouth Festival of the Arts, Tinton Falls, April 19-22. Library hours are Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call the library at (732) 842-2692. Free program on pest management March 19 The Shrewsbury Garden Club will present a free program on pest management March 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Eastern Branch of the Monmouth County Library, 1001 Route 35, Shrewsbury. Master gardener and Shade Tree Commission member Nancy Schmaltz will discuss environmentally friendly control for pests and diseases, which effect common plants, shrubs and trees. In many instances chemical runoff affects the air, waterways and beneficial insects. Also discussed will be how to monitor plant material to protect it from potentially harmful pests and how to plant the right plant in the right place to avoid susceptibility to diseases. Workshop for NJSCA folk arts grants set March 20 The New Jersey State Council on the Arts (NJSCA), Trenton, is currently distributing guidelines and applications for its 2002-03 Folk Arts Apprenticeship grant program. Submission of applications deadline is April 19. Six workshops will be held statewide to assist artists with the application process. Locally, a workshop will be March 20 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Holmdel Library, 4 Crawfords Corner Road. The awards are stipends for apprentices to offset the cost of working with master artists. Play coordinates with centennial celebration Drama students from Rumson-Fair Haven (RFH) Regional High School will present The King and I March 22-24 at the high school auditorium at 74 Ridge Road, Rumson. After the school made the royalty payment, English and drama teacher Suzanne Sweeney received a letter of appreciation from Mary Rodgers, daughter of Richard Rodgers, who wrote the play and score with Oscar Hammerstein. Rodgers’ letter thanked RFH for participating in the "Richard Rodgers Centennial" celebration of his 100th birthday. Rodgers is an honorary patron of the Rodgers and Hammerstein Theater Library, N.Y. Performance times and ticket prices for the play will be announced at a later date. Brookdale to host teen arts festival in March Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown, will host the Monmouth County Teen Arts Festival March 21 and 22 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at various campus locations. The festival is an exhibit of performing and visual arts produced by Monmouth County high school students for an audience of peers, parents, teachers and friends. Categories to be judged by professionals include music, theater, visual art, dance and creative writing. Winners proceed to the statewide teen arts festival. Chorale to perform ‘No Translation Required’ The Shrewsbury Chorale will present the concert, "No Translation Required" conducted by Steven A. Russell March 23 at 8 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 118 W. Main St., Freehold. The concert will feature English choral music to be performed by the chorale with a chamber orchestra. Advance sale tickets are $18, and $15 for seniors and students (must be purchased two days prior to concert). Tickets at the door are $20, and $17 for seniors and students. Matawan resident Russell is the chorale’s music director and conductor, as well as assistant conductor with the Monmouth Civic Chorus since 1996. For more information, call (732) 542-2151. Tickets are available through Carnegie Charge at (212) 247-7800. ‘The King and I’ at RFH slated for March 22-24 The "Tower Players" of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School (RFH) will present The King and I March 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m., and March 24 at 1 p.m. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein play, and also the 100th birthday of Rodgers. The play will be performed by 72 students, including 15 children from local school districts. Tickets are $8, and $6 for children and senior citizens.
