7-year-old saved from drowning

TINTON FALLS — What could have been a tragedy was averted because of the actions of a group of alert adults last week.

Police Sgt. Scott MacDonald responded to a report of an accidental drowning in progress, which occurred during an adult-supervised pool party on Mount Run June 22 at 1:15 p.m. Upon arrival, investigating officers were told that a 7-year-old Shrewsbury Township girl was discovered motionless under 6 feet of water in an in-ground swimming pool on the property.

An adult at the party jumped into the pool and retrieved the child, who remained unconscious. First aid was administered by adults on the scene. As a result, the child gained consciousness and vomited a large amount of water .

Members of the Tinton Falls EMS and MONOC paramedics units responded to the scene and transported the child to Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, where she was treated and released.

Police commented that the prompt reaction by adults on the scene averted a potential fatality.

"This was a situation wherein the adults did absolutely nothing wrong," said Tinton Falls Police Capt. David Trevena. "They were there and watching the kids closely. Sometimes, when there’s a bit of a crowd, unfortunately, accidents can happen for a variety of reasons, and it’s no one’s fault. Visibility under water can be a bit poor when there are more than a few people in and around a pool. These adults were definitely on top of things. They did all the right things at the right times. A great save was the result," he added.
