The Belmar Improvement Fund, in collaboration with the Jersey Shore Running Club, will present the 26th annual Belmar 5-Mile Run July 13. The 2002 Belmar 5-Mile Run is named in memory of longtime Belmar resident, Johnny Cobb. In addition to being an originator of the race, he had a 25-year career in the Belmar Police Department, and was a graduate and supporter of St. Rose High School, and promoted local sports his whole life. A portion of race proceeds will go toward a scholarship at St. Rose in memory of Johnny Cobb.

Along with the premier 5-mile event, a fitness walk and kids’ races are scheduled for the evening of July 13, both of which have continued to become more popular each of the last several years. All events will be held in Belmar, which is known for its beautiful beaches and boardwalk.

Last year over 2,500 participants in the Belmar Five events and hundreds of volunteers made this race one of the premier racing events at the Jersey Shore. The goal this year, with the help of the Jersey Shore Running Club, is to attract 3,500 participants. For race information, visit www.belmar5.com, or call (732) 571-2162.

The Fourth Annual ACFL 6-on-6 Touch Football Tournament has been scheduled for July 28, beginning at 9 a.m. Each year the tournament attracts teams from Monmouth, Somerset, Morris, Union, Essex and Hudson counties, and from throughout the Metro/N.Y.C. area. Cost is $350 per team, and each team is guaranteed three games. Cash prizes will be awarded (based on number of teams in attendance). The Atlantic Coast Football League is in its ninth year and is the area’s largest two-hand touch and flag football association with both a touch football league and a flag football league in the spring/summer, fall and winter seasons. Tournament rules, registration and details are available on the football page at www.onscore.com or call 1-877-ONSCORE to register a team for the tournament or the upcoming fall season. Dozens of game and spectator photos from the event will also be available at www.onscore.com.

The Jersey Chapter of the American Red Cross will host the Fifth Annual JCP&L Co.–Commerce Bank Rock ’n Ride Bike Tour Sept. 8. Riders can cruise a 10-mile course (beginning at 9:30 a.m.) or peddle the 40-mile track (beginning at 9 a.m.), stretching the length of Long Beach Island. Prizes will be awarded to the bikers who collect the most pledges. The registration fee is $10 for adults and $5 for children, age 12 and under. The first 75 riders to register, pay their registration fee, and attend that day will receive a helmet. All proceeds will benefit the Red Cross in Monmouth and Ocean counties. To register, call Jaqueline at 1-888-853-6550, ext. 225, or check out the Web site www.jerseycoast-redcross.org.
