Mary Miltner Held

Mrs. Held, 90, of Red Bank died May 11 at Navesink House, Red Bank. Born in Dayton, Ohio, she resided in Ohio and relocated to Middletown in 1944, prior to moving to Red Bank. She was a retired assistant librarian at Red Bank Catholic High School, and head librarian at St. Thomas Aquinas Library, Red Bank. Prior to that, she was employed at Lincoln National Life Insurance Company. She was a founder of the Court of St. James No. 999 of the Junior Catholic Daughters of America, and a public speaker for the Council of Catholic Women participating in the United Nations education programs. She was a 3rd Order Franciscan, and Mercy Associate of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Watchung. She was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of Monmouth Boat Club, Red Bank. Active in the theater, she managed a theater group, as well as acted in, writing and directing several plays. She was predeceased by her husband Clayton Held; and two sons, Mathew and Robert. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Jim Fitzgerald of Fair Haven, and Rita Held Cartalano and Lou Cartalano of Los Altos, Calif.; two sons and three daughters-in-law, Greg and Jeri Held of Red Bank, Alan and Kaete Held of Wilmington, N.C., and Jeanne Held of Interlaken; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A Mass of the Resurrection was offered at Church of St. Anselm, Wayside section of Tinton Falls. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. Emily J. Garrabrant

Mrs. Garrabrant, 97, of Asbury Park died May 13 at Jersey Care Center, Eatontown. Born in Newark, she resided in Tinton Falls for 70 years before moving to Asbury Park in 1993. She was a telephone operator at Fort Monmouth, Eatontown, before her retirement. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Wayside Fire Department, and the Wayside Woman’s Club, Wayside section of Ocean Township; the Tinton Falls Senior Citizens; and the Monmouth County Office on Aging. She enjoyed gardening and time with her family. Mrs. Garrabrant was predeceased by her husband of 34 years, William; a son, William; and a daughter, Patricia. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Fred J. and Marlene of Estes Park, Colo., and George R. and Phyllis of Maxton, N.C.; a daughter, Carol Bennett of Asbury Park; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Palmira Flego

Mrs. Flego, 98, of Little Silver died May 7 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Pola, Austria, she survived the 1947 exodus from Yugoslavia during the Ethnic Cleansing of Italians prior to immigrating to the United States. She resided in Brooklyn, N.Y., prior to moving to New Jersey in 1962 and Little Silver in 1979. She was a communicant of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. She was a member of Creative Hands, Shadow Lake Village, Middletown. She was predeceased by her husband, Marcello Flego, in 1975. She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Mario and Amelia Flego of Little Silver, and Fulvio Flego of Farmingdale; two daughters and one son-in-law, Marisa Giusti of Middletown, and Gianna and Santo Puleo of Wading River, N.Y.; a sister, Livia Laurini of Italy; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Holy Trinity Church. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. Mr. Schwed, 88, of Fair Haven died May 17 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in New York City, he resided in Norfolk, Va., prior to moving to New Jersey where he resided most of his life. He was a retired electrical engineer in shortwave and aircraft communication at the U.S. Army Signal Laboratory, Fort Monmouth, where he was employed from 1947-77. He also did communication field research at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., and Panama. He was a communicant of Church of the Nativity, Fair Haven. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 3187, Fair Haven; and Association of Retired Fed­eral Employees. He was predeceased by two broth­ers, John and George; and two sisters, Helen Oleksuik and Ann Camp. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sophie Herchakowski Schwed; a brother, Andre Schwed of Red Hook, N.Y.; two nieces; and two nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was at Church of the Nativ­ity. Entombment was at Holmdel Cemetery Mausoleum. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank.

Harry D. Way

Mr. Way, 88, of Little Silver, died May 18 at home. Born in Asbury Park, he resided in Rumson for more than 50 years prior to mov­ing to Little Silver eight years ago. He was a media director at Colgate-Palmolive, New York City, for more than 20 years, retiring in 1983. He served with the U.S. Army as a cap­tain during World War II. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, He­lene Banse Way, in 1998. He is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Daniel and Debra Way of Gloucester, Mass., William Way of New York City, and Michael and Peggy Way of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A graveside service was at Wood­bine Cemetery, Oceanport. Ar­rangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. Valerie Fotheringham Brown

Mrs. Brown of Shadow Lake Village, Red Bank died May 4 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided in Oceanport prior to moving to Red Bank in 1989. She was an executive secretary for several years prior to retirement. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Long Branch. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard W. Brown in 1985. She is survived by a stepdaughter, Annette Boland of Oceanport; two step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. A graveside service was at Glenwood Cemetery, West Long Branch. Benjamin Paul Campo Sr.

Mr. Campo of Englewood died May 9 in New York City. He resided in Rumson prior to moving to Englewood two years ago. He was an attorney in private practice at Campo & Associates, New York City and New Jersey. Prior to that, he was general counsel at Engel­hard Corp., Iselin. He served with the U.S. Army from 1966-68 as captain in the In­telligence Division at Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Colo. He enjoyed reading, skiing and travel. He is survived by his fiancée, Susan Mamarella; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Benjamin and Andrea Campo Jr. of Cumber­land, Maine, and Patrick Campo of New York City; a daughter, Letizia Jean Campo; a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Paula Campo of Cromwell, Conn.; his parents, Loretta and Paul Campo; his first wife, Patri­cia Ann Reynolds; his second wife, Joe Ann Pacinelli; and one granddaughter. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Holy Cross Church, Rumson. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank.
