On June 3, 1972, the president of the Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati put his hands on Sally Priesand’s shoulders and gave her his blessing.

When she turned around, Priesand’s 35 classmates, all men, were on their feet applauding the first female rabbi to be ordained in the United States.

Red Bank to begin $600K Front St. project in June

RED BANK — Front Street has been deemed a crash-prone location by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) after 198 vehicle accidents occurred from 2008 to 2010.

As a result, Monmouth County selected Red Bank as the recipient of NJTPA’s Local Safety Program in 2011, which provides a “quick fix” for safety improvements.

Fair Haven looks at upkeep of private roads

FAIR HAVEN — The Borough Council delayed taking action on a resolution that would set policy on what repair work it would do on the private roads in the town, at its May 14 workshop meeting.

Mayor Benjamin Lucarelli said the borough now does snow removal and minor repairs to these roads, but some of the roads, which are very old, are in need of complete reconstruction.

Kamin selected as Harvard Nieman Fellow

FAIR HAVEN — Blair Kamin, son of Virginia and Arthur Kamin of Fair Haven, has been selected as a Nieman Fellow for Journalism at Harvard University.

The Fair Haven native is the architecture critic at the Chicago Tribune and a Pulitzer Prize winner.
