More finesse, not less, needed for systems

      R

egarding the March 24 story about dispatchers in Tinton Falls, your story has the quote about "too much melding of man and machine" backwards.

In such systems, what the technology seems to say and what a human under intense pressure actually knows must be quickly and accurately integrated.

Making decisions and responding rapidly is the challenge, as any astronaut, automobile driver, micro-surgeon — or dispatcher will tell you.

Though technology itself can be proven to work, melding of man-machine systems remains an art that needs more, not less, attention.
