Red Bank Catholic High School has been selected by the Shore Conference as the 1999/2000 NJSIAA Sportsmanship Award winner. The award was made as part of the luncheon program at the NJSIAA Sportsmanship Summit which was held at the Pines Manor in Edison on Sept. 14. Boyd A. Sands, executive director of the NJSIAA, congratulated the entire Red Bank Catholic community for demonstrating good sportsmanship in the school’s programs. The banner will be hung in the RBC gymnasium on Peters Place.

The 11th annual Great Race will be held Oct. 21 at Middletown High School South. The first race, a competitive 5K, will begin at 12:30 p.m. There will also be competitive 2K races for ages 8 to 10, and 11 to 14. A 1K run for children ages 5-7 and a 2K health walk/run for the entire community will end the day. All proceeds from the race benefit the Middletown school district. Registrations are now being taken at Goodsports in Aberdeen for a one-day youth soccer tournament, boys and girls high school soccer leagues (starting on Nov. 26), boys and girls youth travel soccer leagues for under-9, under-11 and under-13 teams (starting on Dec. 2) and men’s open soccer and men’s over-30 soccer leagues (starting Nov. 21). In addition, "E" license courses for soccer coaches are being held at Goodsports on Oct. 21, 27 and 28 for only $90 per person. Only the first 40 coaches will be accepted. The Central Jersey Hawks under-10 Girls AAU Basketball Team is looking for two or three experienced players to join the team for the 2000-01 season. Must be born in 1990. Call Tom Moreno at (732) 817-1000

Middletown Babe Ruth baseball/softball league will be accepting registrations for its spring baseball/softball season. Ages are from 5-18, and registrations will be taken at the Middletown Library on New Monmouth Road on Nov. 16, from 6-8:30 p.m., and Oct. 21 and 28 from 9 a.m.-noon. Registrations will also be taken at the Middletown Babe Ruth clubhouse at McMahon Park on Oct. 14, Nov. 4, 11 and 25 from 9 a.m.-noon. For more information, call Al Auerbach at (732) 495-6608.

The 20th annual Bruce Berritt Memorial Race Against Hunger will be held in Liberty Oak Park, Georgia Road, Freehold Township, on Oct. 22. The event, sponsored by the men’s club of Temple Shaari Emeth and the Freehold Area Running Club, features a five-mile, all-terrain run on pavement, trails and grass that begins at 9 a.m. There is also a one-mile Fun Run/Fitness Walk (9:10), and a five-mile race walk (9:30). Nick Russo, who guided the St. John Vianney girls’ basketball team to NJSIAA Tournament of Champions titles in 1995 and 1997, will return to the Holmdel school as head coach after a two-year absence. Russo stepped down as head coach after 1998 because of schedule conflicts with his job and to spend more time with his family. Brad Hagensen, who coached the Lancers to the TOC crown in 1999 and resigned after the 2000 season to accept an assistant coach position as Pace University, New York City, has also returned to serve as an assistant coach, along with Bill Bulman.

The 21st annual Frost on the Pumpkin 10K road race will be held in South River on Oct. 29 in the Daley’s Pond area. The fee for the race is $12 until Oct. 25, $15 thereafter. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. at Daley’s Pond. The first 250 finishers will receive a mug, and the first 3250 to register will receive a T-shirt. There will also be a health walk or run beginning at 9 a.m. The event’s proceeds will benefit handicapped persons. for more information, call Jim Genecki at (732) 254-1381.
