Guineys go one-two at Meet of Champions

Cate and Maggie Guiney, juniors at Boston College, ran one-two at the Iona Meet of Champions held at Van Cortlandt Park, the Bronx, N.Y.

Cate Guiney picked up the win touring the famed 6,000-meter course in the Bronx in 20:05.2. Maggie posted a 20:43.1 in second.

The Guineys' one-two finish sparked the Eagles to an impressive team victory in the 22-team field.

The Iona win vaulted B.C.’s women’s to the No. 6 ranking in the nation.

Next up for B.C. women is Friday’s New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston.

The Van Cortlandt Park finish was reminiscent of the final high school race of the Guineys' career at Middletown South. Cate won the 3,200 meters at the All-Groups Meet of Champions with Maggie placing second.

The Guineys have picked up where they left off following sensational high school careers. Cate Guiney was a three-time MOC winner her senior year, capturing the cross country title and the 3,200 meters indoors and outdoors. Cate and Maggie were one-half of the Eagle distance medley relay team that won the indoor national championship.

They have been mainstays at Boston College since arriving in Chestnut Hill.

Last fall, both earned All-American honors, as they sparked the Eagles to the Big East and NCAA District I qualifying meet championships. At the NCAAs, Boston College took fourth, led by Maggie Guineys' 13th place (Cate was 34th). Maggie Guiney won the NCAA District qualifier and was second at the Big East Championships.
