Rumson’s Planer first at Varsity Classic 1,600 in NYC
Rumson-Fair Haven’s Christy Planer turned in her fastest 1,600 meters of the indoor season, 5:11.4, in winning the event at the Ridgewood Varsity Classic held in the New York City Armory Feb. 11.
Planer won impressively, beating runner-up Kate Willever of Hopewell Valley (5:21.6) by more than 10 seconds.
The Ridgewood Varsity Classic, now in its eighth year, brought together some of the best indoor and outdoor high school athletes from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The Armory is host to this year’s biggest meets.
Planer, a double Group I state champion this winter in the 1,600 and 3,200, used the event as a warm-up for the Eastern States Championships at the Armory Tuesday.
At the Eastern States, the Red Bank Regional distance medley relay team of Amanda and Katy Trotter, Katie Kingsbery and Christine Hurley will try and improve on the state indoor record.
The National Scholastic Championships will also be held at the Armory, March 8-10.
