Bravo, Hills, Gill continue to
lead standings at Monmouth Park
Even after missing Saturday’s card with riding engagements at Calder, Joe Bravo continues his march to a record 10th riding title at Monmouth Park.
Through Saturday’s card, "Jersey Joe" has 41 victories and is winning at a 24 percent clip, while piloting 58 percent of his mounts to be in the money finishes. His nine titles were accumulated from 1991-1996, 1999, 2000 and 2003. Bravo has won titles at all four of New Jersey’s racetracks, and in 1991 became the only rider to win titles at Monmouth, Meadowlands and Garden State in a single year.
Second place in the standings belongs to Eibar Coa, leading Monmouth jockey in 2001 and 2002. Coa has 32 victories and is winning at a 23 percent clip. Through Sunday’s card he has taken 34 fewer mounts than Bravo. Rounding out the top five are dual-Classic-winning rider Stewart Elliott with 27 win; and a tie between Chuck C. Lopez, leading rider here in 1998, and Julian Pimentel, leading apprentice here in 2001, each with 21 trips to the winner’s circle.
The trainers race also belongs to a former top conditioner, Tim Hills, who won the title here in 2002. With 16 wins, Hills is four wins ahead of his nearest rival, Preakness and two-time Breeders’ Cup winner Joe Orseno. Gamaliel Vazquez, who trains for last year’s leading owner Michael Gill, is third with 10 victories, two more than the trio of Eddie Broome, Bruce Levine and Alan Goldberg.
The owners’ race is once again a runaway for Michael Gill, who shattered all records last season at Monmouth in winning his first owner’s title. Through Saturday, Gill’s horses have visited the winner’s circle on 13 occasions, eight more than Runnin Horse Farm and New Farm.
