On Oct. 23, the Shrewsbury Gymnastics Girls Level C Team competed at the Jersey Optional Girls Association (JOGA) meet held at All American Gymnastics in Ocean. The results were as follows:

In the 8-9 age group, Delanie Freund, of West Long Branch, took first on the vault (7.1), sixth on the uneven bars (4.4), fourth on the balance beam (6.2), seventh on the floor exercise (6.8) and third in the all-around (24.5). Bailey Bestle, also of West Long Branch, took fifth in the AA (24.15) after taking seventh on the vault (6.2), third on the beam (6.4), fourth on the uneven bars (4.6) and eighth on the floor (6.95). Amy Stevens, of River Plaza, took first on the beam (6.65) and fifth on the uneven bars (4.5).

In the 10-11 age group, Jessica Doscher, of Little Silver, took second in the AA (28.9), after finishing first on the uneven bars (7.1), fourth on the beam (7.1) and ninth on the floor (7.3).

In the 12-12 age group, Erin Hussey was tops in the all-around (30.85), after taking first on the beam (8.0), second on the bars (7.15) and floor (8.0), and eighth on the vault (7.7). Christine Levantino, of Fair Haven, took 13th in the AA (23.95), and finished ninth on the beam (6.2).

Jessica Jasien, of Rumson, received the Colonial Athletic Association Commissioners Academic Award for maintaining a 3.2 GPA, as a member of the James Madison University swimming and diving team. Jessica is an Integrated Science and Technology major and a sophomore at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va.

The 31st Annual Shore Athletic Club Open Cross Country Meet will be held Sunday at Ocean County Park in Lakewood. The first race will start at 9:30 a.m. Age groups from 9-and-under to Masters will be competing for trophies for the top 10 finishers. Men’s and Women’s Open and Master’s competitors will race over a 5K distance. Runners from 9-and-under to 11-and-under will be racing over 1.5 miles and those ages 12-13. 2.0 miles. Entry fees are $3 dollars for runners up to age 13 and $5 for runners 14 and over. For additional information, call (732) 222-9080 or (732) 222-1348.

The 20th Annual Bicycle Hub/Mountain Bike Classic will be held at Allaire State Park,Wall Township on Nov. 21. The cross country race offers riders of all levels a chance to compete on the multi-use trails for the park. There will be several classes for riders to choose from including a Kiddie class for children under 14 and a Cop Classic for security, rescue and fire personnel. Registration for the event will take place from 7-9:45 a.m. on race day with the first race going off at 10. Entry fee is $30. The Freehold-Manalapan Chapter of Women’s American ORT is looking for additional bowlers for a Saturday night monthly adult mixed bowling league. The league bowls on the third Saturday of each month at Howell Lanes. Both teams and individuals can be accommodated. Call Cindy at (732) 409-3742 if interested.

Also, the chapter is sponsoring a children’s bowling league at Brunswick Country Lanes, Route 33, Manalapan. Anyone between the ages of 5-17 is welcome to participate. The World Cup All-Star Cheerleading 10-year-old squad and select members from the Senior All-Star team the Shooting Stars, appeared in New York City Center Monday. The 17 members of the team performed with Toni Basil, known for her VH-1 video hit song Mickey, as part of the 10th Annual Gala Dancing on Air: A Tribute to Dance on TV. The girls performed with Basil as her backup cheerleaders executing the same tumbling, stunting and dance moves that have won them so many national titles. Rehearsals with Basil were held in their Freehold gym and in New York.

World Cup was chosen to appear with Basil because of its reputation as one of the top programs in the country and their location, Freehold. The Shooting Stars have won seven national titles.
