The Level B Jersey Optional Gymnastics League (JOGA) State Championships were held April 30-May 1 at Aerials Gymnastics in Eatontown. The Shrewsbury Gymnastics team placed third among the 25 teams competing with a total score of 101.275. The team is only three years young and has worked very hard to achieve its success. At the State Championships, each gymnast surpassed previous high scores and/or reached goals set for themselves. Although gymnastics can be an individual sport, every gymnast on this team contributed to its success through hard work and support of each other.

The individual results were as follows:

In the 8-11 age group: Britteney Dare (Red Bank) is the All-Around State Champion, achieving her highest score, 34.0. She also is the state champion on balance beam scoring a whopping 9.3. Dare placed second on bars (8.1), 10th on vault (8.3) and 10th on floor (8.3). Kate Povey (Shrewsbury) won third place in the all-around with her best score, 33.55. She also placed second on balance beam with a score of 9.0, third on vault with an 8.55, and seventh on bars (7.65) and floor (8.35). Rachel Delgado (Shrewsbury) placed eighth on vault with a score of 8.325 and ninth on floor exercise also with a score of 8.325. Alicia Meehan (Colts Neck) placed ninth on balance beam with a score of 8.45. Shannon Pace competed with distinction, achieving a personal best all-around score of 31.2.

In the 12-year-old age group: Stephanie Skove (Eatontown) won third place in the AA with her highest score, 33.675. She placed second on balance beam with a score of 8.85, third on vault with an 8.6, fifth on bars (7.75) and seventh on floor (8.475). Stephanie has also reached the qualifying score to advance to the next level of competitive gymnastics. Valerie Marotta (Eatontown) placed fourth on beam with an 8.8, her highest score this year. She also placed eighth on vault with an 8.3. In the 14-year-old age group: Michelle Skove (Eatontown) is the beam state champion with a score of 8.75. She placed seventh in the AA with a 31.5.

Tinton Falls Soccer Club (TFSC) will be holding open tryouts for the 2005-06 soccer season on May 19 and 26 for U12 and U13 teams, and May 20-21 for U9/10/11. Tryouts are for both girls and boys teams that play in the Monmouth-Ocean Soccer Association (MOSA). For time, location and registration for tryouts, visit www.tfsc.org.

Girls Ice Hockey Evaluations/Mid State Golden Blades have announced their evaluations dates for the 2005-06 season. Evaluations are for any skill level from beginner to experienced players ages 6-19. Dates are May 13 (8:30 p.m.), May 14 (10:30 a.m.) and May 15 (11:30 a.m.) at Wall Sports Arena. The Middletown Summer Basketball Boys and Girls League is open to teams in either of two divisions. Players are currently in third-fourth grade, fifth-sixth grade or seventh-eighth grade. Games will be played at various outdoor parks, located in Middletown. Registration fee is $550 per team, maximum 12 players per team and shirts included. It is a 10-game league season, beginning in June and continuing until August. All AAU, recreation, school teams and Mid-Monmouth teams are welcome. The Ocean Township High School baseball team will be conducting a Youth Baseball Clinic on Sunday, May 15. The clinic will start at 10 a.m. on the OTHS varsity baseball field and end at 2 p.m. This fund-raiser will cost each player $30 and all baseball players 7 year old to eighth grade are welcome.
