Local harriers gear up for 29th Belmar 5K
On Saturday, July 9, the Belmar Improvement Fund, in collaboration with the Jersey Shore Running Club, will present the 29th Annual Belmar Five-Mile Run.
The 2005 Belmar Five-Mile run is named in memory of long-time Belmar resident, Johnny Cobb. In addition to being an originator of the race, he had a 25-year career in the Belmar Police Department, and was a graduate and supporter of the St. Rose School, and promoted local sports all of his life. A portion of race proceeds will go toward a scholarship at St. Rose in memory of Johnny Cobb.
Along with the main Five Mile event, we offer a Fitness Walk and Kids’ Races scheduled for Friday night, July 8, both of which have continued to become more popular each of the last several years. All events will be held in Belmar, which is known, of course, for its beautiful beaches and boardwalk.
Participants are treated to post race refreshments, and a Health and Vendor Fair in Silver Lake Park. In addition, Runner’s World and Michalob Ultra will be sponsoring a Free Post-Race Party and Concert at Bar Anticipation following the event.
Belmar Improvement Fund is a volunteer organization founded by Belmar Mayor Ken Pringle. The primary goal of the Improvement Fund is to raise money through various events, including the Belmar Five, for projects to help beautify Belmar.
Last year, over 3,000 participants in the Belmar Five events and hundreds of volunteers made this race one of the premier racing events at the Jersey Shore. This year the goal, with the help of the Jersey Shore Running Club, is to attract 3,500 participants. The Belmar Five is also part of the Meridian Jersey Shore Golden Grand Prix, featuring open and age group prize money at events and for the series.
Registration is still available. Register through the mail, online or in person Wednesday through Friday of race week –– July 6, 7 and 8, 6-8 p.m. For locations and race information, visit www.belmar5.com or call 732 571 2162.
