Police arrest two armed robbery suspects
BY LAYLI WHYTE
Staff Writer

RED BANK — Borough police have arrested two young men who allegedly committed armed robbery last week.

Robert H. Holmes, 21, East Westside Avenue, and David L. McGill Jr., 21, Somerville, were arrested on March 10 after an investigation into an armed robbery that occurred earlier that day. The investigation was led by members of the Red Bank Police Detective Division and the Somerville Police Department.

At 12:40 a.m. on March 10, Red Bank police responded to a report of an armed robbery at Leighton Avenue.

The victim, a 21-year-old borough resident, told police a white male not known to him had visited his home with a mutual friend, and returned later, asking to be let in the back door of the residence.

The suspect was reportedly let in by the victim, and the suspect then allegedly produced a sawed-off shotgun and demanded money.

The victim reportedly gave the suspect less than $100.

The suspect then allegedly escorted the victim out of the home to a waiting vehicle and took him to a gas station at Newman Springs Road and Shrewsbury Avenue.

While at the gas station, the suspect allegedly forced the victim to try to withdraw money from the ATM there.

After he was unable to withdraw any cash, the suspect fled in the vehicle that had been waiting for him.

The vehicle was a blue Hyundai Elantra and was last seen traveling north on Shrewsbury Avenue.

McGill and Holmes were arrested at a residence in Somerville for the robbery. Recovered along with the two accused was a 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun. The shotgun had been reported stolen in New York City in 1991.

McGill was charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, unlawful possession of a sawed-off shotgun, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, aggravated assault and kidnapping. Bail was set in the amount of $225,000.

Holmes was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery. Bail was set at $150,000.

Holmes and McGill were transported to the Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township.
