BCC players selected to All-Region XIX and All-GSAC teams

Brookdale Community College’s (BCC) forward Sydir Mitchell let his consistent play throughout the basketball season speak for itself.

It spoke loud and clear for those voting for the Division III South All-Region XIX and All-Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) South Teams. The Jersey Blue’s forward was the top vote-getter for both teams, earning First Team and Player of the Year recognition with it for the South Region

Mitchell, of Paterson, averaged 22 points a game in leading BCC to this week’s Region tournament.

BCC teammate Jamal Jenkins was named to the All-Region and All-GSAC Second Teams. The sophomore forward is averaging 16 points and 13 rebounds a game for Brookdale.

Freehold Township graduate Manny Ubilla, a freshman at Lackawanna Junior College, was selected to the Division II All-Region Second Team. Ubilla, a guard, led Lackawanna in scoring (17.3 points per game) and in three-points shots (39). Lackawanna is 23-3 and ranked No. 9 in the country among Division II teams.

Brookdale’s women, who won the GSAC title for the second straight year and third time in four seasons, were well represented on both teams. Guard Becky Piper (Colts Neck) and forward Amy Gaudious (Long Branch) finished second and third in the voting for the All-Region and All-GSAC teams. They trailed Gloucester’s Kirby Johnson in both the Region and GSAC.

Piper (Colts Neck), a sophomore guard, led the Blues, ranked No. 9 in the country, in scoring (14.1 points a game). She is averaging six rebounds and three steals and three assists a game for the conference champions.

Gaudious (Long Branch), also a sophomore, is averaging 11 points, 10.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists a game for BCC. She leads the team in rebounding and assists.

Tammy Wood (South River), a forward, is second on the team in points (12.0) and rebounds (8.9) per game. She is a sophomore, who was also an All-American, All-Region and All-GSAC goalie for the Brookdale women’s soccer team.

This week, Piper, Gaudious and Wood hope to lead the Jersey Blues to their first-ever Region title. Brookdale’s women are the No. 1 seed and begin play in Carney’s Point (Salem Community College) this afternoon.

The men’s Region final is Saturday.
