New bird blind now open at Sandy Hook

Gateway National Park Recreation Area, Sandy Hook, has announced a new bird blind overlooking Nike Pond has been completed at Sandy Hook (off Old Dune Trail). Thanks to funding from The Sandy Hook Foundation, the National Park Service (NPS) completed construction in August.

According to Scott Barnes, senior naturalist at the Sandy Hook Bird Observatory of the New Jersey Audubon Society, the blind has viewing ports, and doesn’t have a roof so birders won’t miss birds flying overhead. Birds that may be spotted at Nike Pond include the state endangered black-crowned night heron, pied-billed grebe, wood ducks, American wigeons, common yellowthroats, and various swallows. For directions to the blind, or more information, call the foundation office at (732) 291-7733 or visit the Web site at www.sandyhookfoundationnj.org.
