Volunteer to help protect shorebirds

The American Littoral Society is seeking volunteers to support the National Park Service's efforts to protect the habitat of endangered and threatened shorebirds including the Piping Plover and Least Tern that breed on Sandy Hook from mid-March through September. Volunteers are needed on Saturday, March 18, to repair and install fences to protect critical habitat. The rain date is Sunday, March 19.

Volunteers should meet at the Sandy Hook Visitor Center parking lot at 9 a.m. Bring work gloves, sturdy shoes, warm dress and a bag lunch. Information about how to become a shorebird warden to provide ongoing protection for the shorebirds during the summer season will be provided the day of the event.

Little Silver Woman's Club elects officers

The Little Silver Woman's Club has elected its new officers. Joan Coffee will serve as president, and Kathy Doty will serve as vice president.

Madeline Ottino is the recording secretary, while Joanne Bennett is corresponding secretary and Margaret Warga is financial secretary.

The club's next meeting will be held April 6 at 7 p.m. at the clubhouse, Church Street, Little Silver. An installation dinner will be held May 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Rooney's, Ocean Avenue, Long Branch.

Mended Hearts support group to meet March 23

The support organization Mended Hearts will hold its next meeting March 23 at noon at Riverview Medical Center, 1 Riverview Plaza, Red Bank. The group is for heart patients, families, health professionals and other interested individuals.

Diabetes update at SCAN slated for April 26

Bernard Shagan, M.D., from Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, will present a diabetes update April 26 from 1-3 p.m. at SCAN Learning Center, Monmouth Mall, Eatontown. The program is for SCAN members, and membership is open to individuals age 50 and older (fee required). Topics will include signs, symptoms, diagnosis and latest treatment options for diabetes.
