Thorne run set to be held on May 21

The Fourth Annual Michael W. Thorne Scholarship Run will be held on Sunday, May 21, beginning at 9 a.m. at Franklin Lake Park off Locust Avenue in West Long Branch.

The four-mile run/walk starts at the park and continues as a mostly flat course through the neighborhoods of West Long Branch. Kids' races will kick off at 9:45 a.m. All kids will receive medals. Registration will open at 7 p.m. at the park and close at 8:45 a.m. Runners can also register at www.active.com.

The walk/run honors Michael W. Thorne, a firefighter for West Long Branch Fire Company No. 2 who died in the line of duty at age 20 on July 3, 1984.

All of the proceeds raised from the race will go directly to the Thorne scholarship fund. The event is sponsored by the West Long Branch Fire Department and its Ladies' Auxiliary.
