'Kitchen Saints and Backyard Heroes'

"The Center""The Center" Robert Edelhauser finds the human face intriguing. He paints ordinary people, their faces reflecting hardship and struggles, but also a spirit of engaging life on its own terms.

The Ocean Township resident's intense, representational portraits with their strong brushwork reflect his interest in portraying emotional truths as well as physical likenesses.

An exhibit of Edelhauser's portraits, "Kitchen Saints and Backyard Heroes," will open at the Middletown Township Public Library on Aug. 2 and run through Sept. 2.

"True saints and heroes keep an open heart in the face of pain and suffering. The unconcealed brushwork in my paintings reflects this paradox by revealing the journey as well as the destination," according to the artist.

Edelhauser, a physician, started painting in midlife, studying with artist and teacher Grace Graupe-Pillard. His work has won awards in statewide shows, and has been exhibited at the Thompson Park Visitor Center, the Monmouth Museum, the Art Alliance in Red Bank, and The Ocean County Artists Guild.
