Sea Bright Recreation Committee will host a free concert by rock duo Van Jay on the municipal beach from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 11. The band performs rock and pop songs from the 1950s through today. Concert goers are encouraged to bring beach chairs and picnic baskets. No alcohol is permitted.

The free summer reading program for preschoolers and school-age children concludes at the Sea Bright Library, 1097 E. Ocean Avenue, on Aug. 23. A final party will be held for readers at 3:45 p.m.and is by invitation only. There is no program on Aug. 16.

Legendary Hawaiian surfer and movie actor Darrick Doerner has joined the board of directors of Sea Bright-based Surfers' Environmental Alliance (SEA) and this month he's on a publicity swing through the Jersey Shore, raising money for SEA and promoting his new surfing film "All Aboard the Crazy Train." There will be a screening of the film at Echo Restaurant and Lounge, 79 Monmouth St. on Thursday, Aug. 17 at 8 p.m. Doerner will be present and there will be a $10 cover at the door.

Monmouth University's Woodrow Wilson Hall will again be the venue for the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Planning Authority's next gathering.

The public is invited to attend the next meeting of the 10-member panel which is scheduled for 4 p.m. next Wednesday inside the downstairs meeting room at Wilson Hall.

Members of the public will be allowed to address the authority after its regular business is concluded.

Wednesday's meeting will mark the third in a series for the authority, a public/private partnership set up last spring by state legislation.

By the order of Gov. Jon S. Corzine and the N.J. State Legislature, the authority has been designated as the entity to oversee future economic development of Fort Monmouth after the 89-year-old U.S. Army base is shuttered by the Pentagon in September 2011.

The Elks will host a pancake breakfast Aug. 27 from 9 a.m. to noon at their lodge at 40 W. Front St to benefit Cpl. Jeremy Trakimowicz, who is presently assigned to the 6th Motor Transport Battalion, and his family. The cost of the breakfast is $10. Trakimowicz was severely wounded in combat on June 24 while conducting a combat operation near Fallujah, Iraq. He sustained severe wounds to the left side of his head from a roadside bomb explosion. A Purple Heart recipient, he is currently undergoing rehabilitation at Kessler Institute in West Orange.

Recently, the Red Bank Elks Lodge 233 donated $1,000 to the Elks Army of Hope which was started to help families who lost loved ones in Iraq. However, the Elks have recently expanded their outreach to families with loved ones injured in Iraq to help cover their living expenses.
