Save Sandy Hook will hold a fundraiser featuring the Leif Arntzen jazz trio Sept. 10 from 4-6 p.m. at the riverfront home of Judith Stanley Coleman, Middletown. Coleman is president of Save Sandy Hook. Concert proceeds will help support the group's legal efforts to keep businesses out of Fort Hancock, Sandy Hook. The event will also feature cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Leif Arntzen is a singer, songwriter, trumpeter and guitarist. He lives and works in New York City with his band tlab. His works feature moody melodies, and are described as "original-acoustic-slightly-psychedelic-folky-rock" sound. The Alzheimer's Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter, will hold caregiver support group meetings Sept. 13 at Kensington Court, 864 Shrewsbury Ave., Tinton Falls; Sept. 19 at Bayshore Community Hospital, 727 N. Beers St., Holmdel; and Sept. 28 at Brighton Gardens, 620 Route 35 south, Middletown. All meetings are at 7 p.m. Call the helpline at (800) 883-1180. VNA hospice volunteer sessions begin Sept. 14 The Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey (VNACJ) hospice program will offer sessions to individuals interested in becoming hospice volunteers, Sept. 14, 21 and 28 and Oct. 5, from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Red Bank campus, 176 Riverside Ave. "Understanding Caring: Understanding Hospice" will be presented by VNA members. Volunteers provide companionship to patients in Monmouth, Middlesex or Ocean counties, and may also supply clerical support in VNA's Tinton Falls office. Registration due Sept. 12 for Jewish singles event The Jewish Community Center of Western Monmouth County will sponsor an apple- and pumpkin-picking event Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. at Eastmont Orchards, Route 537, Colts Neck. Agency seeks volunteers for domestic violence team 180, Turning Lives Around will conduct a 40-hour certification training for Domestic Violence Response Team (DVRT) volunteers. The volunteer advocates, whose identities are kept anonymous, work in conjunction with the police to provide support, information and referrals to victims of domestic violence. The volunteer advocates are specially trained to empower victims to make decisions about their own lives. A DVRT volunteer is available 24 hours a day to meet confidentially with a victim. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, have access to transportation, possess a valid driver's license, be willing to serve on an on-call shift basis, and submit to background investigations and fingerprinting. The 40-hour mandatory intensive training course will be provided to successful applicants, in the evening from Oct. 23 to Nov. 15 at the Matawan-Aberdeen Board of Education offices in Aberdeen. Prior knowledge of domestic violence is not required. The police departments and 180 Turning Lives Around are committed to culturally diverse teams to better serve the community, therefore bilingual capability is a plus.
