Audubon Society slates bird walk, meeting

The Monmouth County Audubon Society will host a bird walk Feb. 10 at 9 a.m. at Sandy Hook beginning at the visitor's center.

The free trip is open to members and nonmembers and will be led by birders familiar with Sandy Hook and its birds. Some birds that may be spotted include the northern harrier and snow bunting. Birders should dress appropriately, and bring binoculars. A field guide is helpful.

The society's next meeting will be Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, White Street, Red Bank. The public is welcome, and admission is free. Princeton University professor Martin Wikelski will present "Songbird Migration: Tracking Individual Birds Between Continents." He will explain the mechanics behind the radio telemetry scientists use to follow the migration of individual songbirds. Refreshments will be served.

Tickets now available for JLMC's spring market

The Junior League of Monmouth County (JLMC) will host two luncheons and a preview gala March 2 and 3 during the second annual spring market at the Sheraton Hotel, Industrial Way, Eatontown.

"The Devil Does Lunch" will be March 2 from 1-3 p.m. and feature Linda Francis Lee, author of "The Devil in the Junior League." There will also be a book signing by the author, lunch, a goodie bag, and admission to shopping. "Dishing With a Diva Luncheon" will be March 3 from noon-2 p.m. Actress Kim Zimmer of The Guiding Light will be the guest at the mother/daughter event. It will also feature lunch, and admission to shopping and a goodie bag. Admission to the above is $50 per person.

The "Jeans and Jewels Preview Gala" will be March 2 from 7-10 p.m., and includes cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, live music, admission to shopping, a three-hour open bar, live music and auction items. Tickets are $85 each. Advance registration is required.

The annual spring market March 2 from 3-7 p.m., and March 3 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. will be at the Sheraton Hotel. It will feature vendors from the East Coast offering items such as women's, men's and children's clothing and accessories, home goods and hostess gifts. Admission is $8 at the door, and $5 in advance. Applications now taken for Engberg Scholarship

Brookdale Community College Foundation and Alumni Association, Lincroft section of Middletown, has announced the 2007 Ted Engberg $1,000 Conservation Scholarship application is now available, with application deadline of May 1.

The scholarship will be awarded to a Brookdale student graduating in the spring and accepted at a four-year college/university for fall 2007. The student must be a Monmouth County resident majoring in a conservation-related field such as biology, botany, forestry, environmental studies, teacher/naturalist or related major. Applicants must submit a 250-500 word-processed essay on "Why I am majoring in conservation." The application should contain name, address, phone number and e-mail address, and included a Brookdale transcript with current GPA and a letter of acceptance to a four-year college/university.

Spaghetti dinner at Oceanport UMC Feb. 3

Oceanport United Methodist Church (UMC), 50 Main St., will host a spaghetti dinner Feb. 3 from 5-7 p.m. (snow date Feb. 10). Tickets are $6 in advance, and $7 and $3 for children age 2-11 at the door.

Deep Cut Orchid Society show begins Feb. 8

The 10th annual Deep Cut Orchid Society orchid show will be Feb. 8-11 at the greenhouse at Dearborn Market, Route 35 South and Centerville Road, Holmdel. Hours are Feb. 8-10 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Orchid societies, and growers from the tristate area will present exhibits, and orchids displayed will range in size to 150 feet. A panel of American Orchid Society judges will award ribbons and trophies Feb. 8 for plants and exhibits.
