Kalaka-Adams SEA BRIGHT - Incumbent Mayor Jo-Ann Kalaka-Adams was the winner in the Republican primary, after being challenged by former Councilman C. Read Murphy in the June 5 primary election.

Murphy, who acknowledged he was not supported by either the borough or county Republicans, received 48 votes and Kalaka-Adams garnered 93.

There were no other contested positions. Incumbent Republican Borough Council members Peggy Bills and Brian Kelly received 122 votes and 117, respectively.

Democrat Susana Markson, who is seeking a council seat, had 39 votes.

Councilwoman Maria Fernandes received 44 votes as Democratic candidate for mayor.

The council now has three Democrats and three Republicans, with the mayor having the tie-breaking vote.

"Each day since I was sworn in as mayor of Sea Bright in January 2004, I have done my best to perform my duties, to represent and advocate for the town and serve each one of our residents and the business community," Kalaka-Adams said after the election.

"I'm grateful that my efforts and commitment have been recognized by the voters in my party in the strong show of support in the primary."

"I thank Read Murphy not only for his contribution to the community as a past member of the council and a current member of the fire department, but for the support for me as successful Republican candidate in the November election."

She said she welcomed Murphy, who has lived for a time in Red Bank, back to the borough and "looked forward to his continued involvement in our community."

Murphy could not be reached for comment.
