On Sunday, Sept. 9, the Monmouth County Park System will sponsor the 24th Annual Sprint Triathlon at Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park, Ocean Avenue, Long Branch. A Jersey Shore tradition, this race is a 1/2-mile ocean swim, 13-mile bike ride, and 4-mile run.

The swim and run portions of the competition remain the same as in past years; however, the bicycle course has been straightened for 2007. Automobiles are not restricted from using the roads while the race is in progress: participants must bike on the road's shoulder, obey traffic rules and be cautious of traffic at all times. In the event of rough ocean surf, a beach run may be substituted for the swim.

The event will begin at 7:45 am (check in between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.) The registration fee is $45. Entries will be accepted until Aug. 31 or maximum field size is reached. Race day entries are not accepted. Visit monmouthcountyparks.com for an application or call (732) 542-1642, ext. 23. For people with hearing or speech impairment, the TDD/TYY number is 711.

The Saturday in the Park 5K Run will be on Sept. 1, at 9 a.m., rain or shine. This race, which is held annually, is now in its 14th year at Holmdel Park. The race is a three-mile scenic route welcoming runners and walkers alike who will be taking steps to build awareness throughout New Jersey to benefit the following charities: Epiphany House of Asbury Park and Long Branch, Spring House of Eatontown and Providence House, which serves all of Ocean County to provide shelter, counseling and education to women and their families.

Jersey Shore Running Club, the largest running club in New Jersey, is dedicated to both running and the community sponsors this race along with many other organizations. If you would like to be a sponsor, donate or want more information about the race, please contact Penny Hinck, race director (732) 571-2162 or visit www.saturdayinthepark5k.org.
