'Pigment and Pastiche'
An exhibit of paintings, prints and photographs by John Salvi will open Dec. 1 at the Oceanic Free Library in Rumson.
"Red Terrace Canyon" "Pigment and Pastiche" will run through Dec. 29 at the library, located at Avenue of the Two Rivers. An artist's reception will take place Friday, Dec. 7, 6 - 8 p.m.
All artwork is for sale with 30 percent of the proceeds donated to the Oceanic Free Library.
Jewelry designs by Donna P. Ryan- Kocun will be on exhibit in the library's display case for the month.
"Pigment and Pastiche" is a multi-layered show consisting of abstract expressionist paintings and a variety of media by Salvi, a Monmouth Beach resident and retired science educator.
In these acrylic paintings, Salvi goes deeper into abstraction, using bold gesture and large brushstrokes to lay on rich colors that add to the visual "pastiche."
Lithographs designed from Salvi's experiments with digital photography are saturated with color, and limited edition digital prints included in the exhibit are compilations of images and shifting color. Familiar objects are transformed into strangely beautiful renderings by the artist's shuffling of color and geometry.
"Marrakech" Ryan-Kocun taught art in the Woodbridge Township Public School system for 32 years. She has exhibited her artwork in fiber and jewelry in shows and galleries around the country, most recently, the Monmouth Festival of the Arts.
Her focus is on color in her sculptural jewelry and "Art Wear" collection. She teaches teens and adults locally and on the national level.
Hours at the Oceanic Free Library are Monday and Thursday, 1 - 7 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. For more information, contact the library at (732) 842-2692 or e-mail to johnsalvi@msn.com.
