      NOTES AROUND TOWN

      There were nearly 30 performers on stage, and students, faculty, administration and staff at Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School helped every step of the way tomake "cancercrushernight" a success. Therewas dancing in the aisles to themusic of Laura Higgins and Holiday Express in the RFH auditorium Dec. 5 during the event organized by RFH junior Amanda McKean and sponsored by the RFH Health Club. McKean is a cancer survivor who put the event together to raise awareness and funds for The Valerie Fund Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at The Children's Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center and The I'm Too Young for This! Cancer Foundation for YoungAdults. Vocalist Laura Higgins, a Boston Music Awards nominee and cancer survivor, performed. Despite their nonstop holiday schedule, Tim McLoone and Holiday Express also performed. McLoone's son Jack is currently undergoing treatment for leukemia. Nearly 70 local businesses and families donated gifts. The event is a coat, hat, glove and scarf drive for individuals in need. The items will be donated to Jersey Cares, The Salvation Army, Goodwill and other local charities statewide. The VNACJ Hospice Team joined with hospice families andmembers of the community to memorialize a loved one through the traditional Holiday Tree of Lights Nov. 27. The tree, located on the grounds of the VNACJ headquarters in Red Bank. Cottrell's husband Jim received hospice care from VNACJ in 2006. The tree will remain illuminated throughout the holidays as a testament to lives lived and a tribute to the hospice philosophy of care. Health Club President Brenna Tudor began the outreach in order to bring new clothing and holiday cheer to the 39 children at this hospital and she and several clubmembers delivered the gifts in December. The Red Bank Borough School District is responsible to locate, identify and evaluate children, ages 3-5 whomay be disabled. Included in the district's "child find" are public and nonpublic children and children who are highlymobile such asmigrant and homeless students.

      Saint James Elementary School, 30 Peters Place in Red Bank, will have an open house for prospective families on the following dates: Jan. 13, 1-2 p.m., preschool and kindergarten; Jan. 29, 9- 11 a.m., preschool through the eighth grade.

      Saint James School also hosts informational sessions with Principal Janet Dolan on Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:30 a.m. by appointment. Throughout the winter and early spring, allowing families to tour the facilities and learn about curriculum and philosophy, activities and all aspects of school life.       Lincroft chapter ofUNICO was officially formed in September. The celebration was held at Ninette's Italian restaurant in Tinton Falls.

      The Lincroft chapter is part of UNICO National, a nationwide service organization whose members are exclusivelyAmericans of Italian heritage, or married to those of Italian heritage. UNICO is the largest Italian American service organization in the U.S. Charter officers are; Mark Mastroberti, president; Daniel Petrocelli, vice president; Vincent Pollitto, treasurer Bernadette Grabowski, secretary Rocky Aragon, sergeant at arms.

      Currently there are 37 chaptermembers who meet monthly to discuss various ways to raise money to help local communities. UNICO National's motto is "Service Above Self."

      New Jersey award-winning composer and pianist Paul Zeigler will perform his newly composed "Peace: An Antiwar Song Cycle on Five Poems" by LangstonHughes, with mezzo-soprano Patricia Ruggles Jan. 20 at 4 p.m. Also on the program will be "Sonata for Violin and Piano" with Renee Jolles, violin. The concert will be at Unitarian Universalist Meetinghouse, 1475 W. Front St., Lincroft section of Middletown. Tickets are $25, $15 for students and seniors, and $5 for children younger than age 12.
