Driver finds no fair haven A few months ago, returning from dinner, we were stopped on River Road in Fair Haven for exceeding the speed limit. After producing the license and registration, my wife was asked to exit the car and walk on the sidewalk (shoeless) while a flashlight was pointed inches from her face. After she zipped through the alphabet, the officer was still not satisfied and requested a Breathalyzer. We were separated, each driven to the FHPD for the test. "I normally handcuff people to a chair, but you seem like a nice lady," opined the buzz-cut in blue. Though she passed the test, "I still think you're under the influence" was proffered, resulting in a DUI, careless driving and speeding, a total of six points. The car was impounded, necessitating a call to our son at 1:30 a.m. The "discovery" papers took some time to get from Fair Haven to the attorney, and last week (and a few thousand later) we paid the fine for "careless and speeding," and exited the court. The point of the letter: you may want to consider avoiding River Road, particularly at night, for surely you will no longer find it a fair haven.
