East Asian film series at BCC The International Center at Brookdale Community College will host an East Asian Film Series. Screenings are free and will be held Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the MAN building, room 105, at the Lincroft main campus. Parking is most convenient in lots 6, 7 and 1. The schedule is: Tuesday, Feb. 20 - "Osaka Elegy" (1936) directed by Mizoguchi Kenji. The film portrays the plight of a young city woman caught between the traditional values of old and the harsh realities and hypocrisies of the modern city. In Japanese with English subtitles. Tuesday, March 20 - "To Live" directed by Zhang Yimou (1994). What it meant to live through China's tumultuous 20th century is told through the joys and travails of a single family. Banned in China, this film offers a critique of China under the rule of Mao Zedong. In Chinese with English subtitles. Tuesday, April 3 - "Grave of the Fireflies" directed by Takahata Isao (1988). This acclaimed animated film depicts the struggles of a young brother and sister to survive during the final days of World War II in Japan. In Japanese with English subtitles. Tuesday, April 17 - "Joint Security Area" directed by Park Chan-wook (2000) This South Korean thriller centers around the investigation of an incident at the 38th parallel dividing North and South Korea. The investigation reveals an illicit cross-border friendship. In Korean with English subtitles. Tuesday, May 1 - "Shower" directed by Zhang Yang (1999). A Shanghai businessman returns home to help out in his father's bathhouse. This heartwarming film explores the impact of China's rapid modernization on the traditions of a Beijing neighborhood.
