Searching for peace through dialogue

Dr. Dan Bar-On and Dr. Sami Adwan

The Monmouth Center for World Religions and Ethical Thought is the sponsor of the eighth Shanti (Peace) Lecture that will be held Sunday, April 29, from 4-6 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House, 1475 W. Front St., Lincroft.

Titled "In Search of Peace: Palestinian and Israeli Learning Each Other's Historical Narratives," the lecture will be delivered by Dr. Dan Bar-On, professor of psychology at Ben-Gurion University, and Dr. Sami Adwan, Faculty of Education at Bethlehem University. They are co- directors of the Peace Research Institute in the Middle East (PRIME) and Fulbright Scholars, Monmouth University, West Long Branch.

Early in his career, Bar-On launched pioneering field research in Germany, studying the psychological and moral after-effects of the Holocaust on the children of the perpetrators. His book, "Legacy of Silence: Encounters with Children of the Third Reich," was published in 1989 by Harvard University Press. In 1996, he was awarded the David Lopatie Chair for Post-Holocaust Psychological Studies.

Adwan's publications include "Learn to Live Together," with Dr. Ruth Firer; "Comparative Analysis of the Israeli and Palestinian Conflict in History and Civic Education"; "Two Conflicts, Four Countries (Greece, Turkey, Israel, and Palestine)"; and "The Historical Perception of Israeli and Palestinian Youth," with Dr. Shifra Sagy. Both are recipients of the Alexander Langer Foundation Prize for their work and dedication to peace.
