Notes This month is American Stroke Month and the American Stroke Association is a offering a free stroke awareness risk assessment and screening program developed to educate the public about stroke, its warning signs and risk factors and preventive steps to minimize a person's risk of stroke. The screenings will be held at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Tinton Falls, 2 Centre Plaza, on Thursday, May 24, from 9-11 a.m. Appointments are not necessary. For more information about StrokeAlert! or other screening locations near you, call the American Stroke Association at 1-888-478-7653. ***** HABcore will hold a benefit concert, "Jazz by the River," 4-7 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at the home of Laurie and Ed McNamee in Rumson. The concert will feature a jazz quartet led by Art Topilow on piano with Vinnie Correo on guitar, Norman Edge on bass, and Tom Sayek on drums. Tickets are $65 per person, and all proceeds will go to HABcore's program to provide stability, dignity and hope for the homeless. For more information, call the HABcore office at (732) 544-1975. HABcore Inc., a not-for-profit corporation serving Monmouth and adjacent counties for 18 years, is devoted to providing permanent and transitional supportive housing for persons who are homeless, disabled, or unable to care for themselves. ***** The Junior Auxiliary for Women's Service (Jaws) Circle of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Long Branch is scheduled to hold a multifamily yard sale on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 35 Monitto Place in Oceanport. The rain date for the event is scheduled for June 1 and 2. ***** The Kortney Rose Foundation will host its inaugural dinner-dance and theater event June 1 at Gibbs Hall in Eatontown from 7 to 11 p.m. Featured at the event will be "Vinny Provolone and Carmella Mozzarella's Engagement Party" as well as a gift and silent auction. Kortney Rose Gillette succumbed to a pediatric brain tumor on April 27, 2006. The Kortney Rose foundation is a 501(c) 3 organization founded in Kortney's memory. The organization is dedicated to raising funds for research and awareness related to the treatment and cure of pediatric brain tumors. All fundraising efforts in 2007 will benefit the pediatric brain tumor research program at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The gift auction, silent auction and raffles will include items such as jewelry, sports memorabilia and gift certificates that have been donated by local businesses. Tickets for the event are $75.
