Candidates Night slated for Oct. 10

RED BANK - The Westside Community Group will host its 11th annual Candidates Night Oct. 10.

Candidates Night will start at 7 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. in the community room at River Street Commons on 49 Catherine St.

Each of the six candidates for Borough Council will have time for three-minute opening and closing statements. The time in between will be devoted to questions from the public, according to Amy Goldsmith, president of the Westside Community Group, who will be the moderator.

There are three, three-year term council seats up for election Nov. 6. The seats are currently held by Democrats Robert J. Bifani and Sharon Lee and Republican Mary-Grace Cangemi.

Bifani will not seek re-election after serving 14 years on the council. Lee and Cangemi are both running for re-election.

Lee is completing her first council term, having been elected in 2004.

Cangemi was appointed to council in March to fill the unexpired term of Republican Kaye Ernst, who resigned her council seat.

The four new candidates include Democrats Kathleen Horgan and Edward Zipprich and Republicans Jim Coolahan and John Tyler.

"We really want to get to the issues," said Goldsmith. "If you don't know them [the candidates], it's a great way to get to know them and what they stand for."
