Garden club hosts flower show
The Navesink Garden Club of Red Bank ushered in the beginning of its 61st season with a show of outstanding horticulture and exquisite designs. The Standard Flower Show "Autumn Sonata" was held Sept. 11 at the Trinity Episcopal Church Parish Hall in downtown Red Bank.

Gotti Kelley (r), past president of the Navesink Garden Club, presents Bernice Maguire with her cache of silver at the Navesink Garden Club's "Autumn Sonata" flower show.
From among the 166 horticultural entries and 20 floral designs, four silver trophies and nine National Garden Club ribbons were awarded.

The Brendan Byrne trophy and the Pillsbury award went to Bernice Maguire of Leonardo for the highest number of points in all divisions and highest number of horticulture points, respectively.

Kathleen Panepinto of Red Bank received the Williamson Bowl for Horticultural Excellence. She also took the Educational Award and the Yount Trophy for the Most Outstanding Special Exhibit as well as the Award of Merit.

Other Awards of Merit went to Bernice Maguire, Betty Jean Meyer, Pat Dygulski (all Navesink GC members) and Nancy Schmaltz of the Shrewsbury Garden Club. Barbara Reed won the coveted Tricolor Award for her exquisite design of bright sunflowers.

The nine judges from the National Garden Clubs awarded the flower show a high rating for the quality of its exhibits and presentation.
