Walk to feed the hungry
The 27th Crop Hunger Walk in the Red Bank Area will take place Sunday, Oct. 21, starting at Red Bank Regional High School, through Fair Haven, Red Bank and Little Silver, to raise funds for 15 local hunger-fighting partner programs in Monmouth County.

The Crop Walk will collect rice, beans and peanut butter for local food pantries serving an ever-increasing number of families in need.

Crop Walk funds help across the world to support refugees driven from their homes, millions affected by natural disasters, and educational programs, well drilling, health facilities, and tools to help people sustain themselves.

Now 60 years old, Church World Service (CWS) began by shipping grain to the nation's former enemies in Europe so that millions would not starve following World War II. In 80 countries, CWS works through nongovernmental partners to reach those falling through the cracks.

Here at home the work continues to help people affected by 9/11 and Katrina, and Crop funds make possible immediate disaster response, to help rebuild communities.

Red Bank Crop Walk is organized by volunteers from faith groups, schools and civic groups with help from police and fire police, radio amateurs, girl scouts, and other sponsors, who hand out water and cheer walkers and runners on.

The 5.2-mile walk includes water stops and education displays. Students may enter the Art for Hunger Contest. Bring your poster or banner to RBRHS to be displayed and judged, and prizes will be awarded.

Sponsor sheets and information are available through schools, churches and temples, or call (732) 530-7674. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. and the walk takes off at 1:30 p.m. Bring a can of beans or peanut butter, or a box of rice, bring your walking shoes, and come walk with because others have to walk, for food, for water, for school, for work, or for security.
