Capt. Kevin Burke, a deputy troop commander for the New Jersey State Police and an area resident, was selected to carry the "Flame of Hope" torch in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg for the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, China. The Torch Run was held Sept. 24 to Oct. 3. Burke, who was selected from a pool of 2,700 members of the New Jersey Law Enforcement Torch Runners, trained for the past 10 months Carried on the ground by teams of athletes and law enforcement personnel from around the world, the flame will travel more than 22,000 miles, touching down on five continents over a period of three months before arriving in Shanghai, where it ignited the cauldron at the opening ceremony of the 2007 World Games Oct. 3.
Chase for Life presents the 2007 "Breathe Easy" rock benefit concert, where fashion, rock and animation collide on stage. The concert will feature Rusted Root and The Kin. The Oct. 13 event will spotlight Chase for Life's mission of providing free infant/child CPR and choking maneuver education in a modern, fun and hip manner. The event will take place at the Two River Theatre, 21 Bridge Ave., in Red Bank, 6 p.m. to midnight. Proceeds will continue to the national awareness programs and education efforts of Chase for Life, a New Jersey-based nonprofit which stands for CPR-Heimlich-Awareness- Safety-Education. Red Bank Regional (RBR) High School Source Director Gilda Rogers will be honored by the Celebration of Life Awards (COLA) foundation and will receive the Leaders in the Community Award Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Newark Museum. According to the foundation, Rogers was chosen for the award for her dedication and commitment to making a difference in the lives of youth and families. Rogers has served as director of RBR's schoolbased Youth Services Program for the past two years. She spearheads programs that encourage academic success by assisting students with challenging educational and personal issues. This spring, she will teach African American history on the RBR campus after school hours for college credit. COLA is a central New Jerseybased organization that recognizes ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things within their community.

The Woman's Club of Little Silver (WCLS) will hold a yard and bake sale Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will take place at the clubhouse on Church Street. The sale will feature household items, clothing, toys, as well as home-baked goods. Fifty-fifty raffle books are currently on sale by club members and tickets are $2 or $10 for a book of five. Proceeds of the fundraiser go to the Wounded Soldiers of New Jersey for telephone cards. Members are still collecting canceled stamps and old costume jewelry to be converted into charity funds. Business meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the clubhouse. New and prospective members are welcome to join. "Afternoon at Riverwind," Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey's 16th annual country fair for children, will be held Sunday, 1-4 p.m. Formerly known as '"An Afternoon at Jolly Cackle Farm," the fair will be held at Riverwind, 700 Navesink River Road, Middletown. The rain date is Oct. 21. This year's fair features popular children's events, including clowns, pony and train rides, petting zoo, a magician, the "Pirate Bounce," and a live snake show presented by the Monmouth County Park System. In addition, there will be music, arts and crafts, and lots of food and refreshments.

Advance tickets are $125 per family and include all activities and food. Tickets are available by calling the VNA office at (732) 224-6791. Tickets on the day of the event are $150 per family. Riverwind is sponsored by the VNACJ Children's Auxiliary, which raises funds to benefit the agency's many services for children in need.

Judith Stanley Coleman, a lifelong resident of Monmouth County, was honored by the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders as one of the original founders of the Monmouth Conservation Foundation, where she has served as president for more than 25 years.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the foundation, which has preserved 6,000 acres of open space and farmland and has been working to protect the natural resources of Monmouth County.
