Council adopts rules for PODs

LITTLE SILVER - Those who do not comply with a new ordinance regulating portable storage units will be faced with a steep fine.

At the Oct. 1 meeting, the Little Silver Borough Council approved an ordinance requiring residents to apply for a $25 permit before placing a portable storage unit or POD on their property.

While the application cost may be reasonable, the penalty a resident may incur if a permit is not obtained is seven times higher at $175.

The ordinance was first introduced Sept. 4 and is similar to ordinances passed by other municipalities to regulate placement of PODs.

The ordinance includes other conditions stipulating where the storage units can be located and their size.

It states PODS "can be located in the driveway or sideyard of the premises for a maximum of 90 days upon issuance of a permit from the borough zoning officer."

The ordinance also states that the maximum height for the structure should be no more than 8 feet and the unit measure no more than 10 feet in width and 20 feet in length.
