Landscapes offer a window into nature
His first teacher was his father, who spent hours sketching and drawing with him, both in nature and from pictures taken around their mountain home. As he grew older, he outgrew the small town and Addis ventured out on his own. He enlisted in the Navy and experienced different countries and landscapes, then settled in Cincinnati. There he took classes in drawing and composition at the University of Cincinnati and taught himself to paint. He also made his professional debut in one of the oldest, most established galleries in the region, Closson's. In an artist's statement, Addis, who currently lives in Montreal, provides insight: "My paintings are an expression of mood or emotion within a design that allows a window in for people to see what they want or need to see.
He continues, "The more specific the subject matter, the smaller the window of common experience that is shared." Addis has shown extensively across North America, including galleries in Montreal, Provincetown, Chicago, Boston, Toronto and New York City and has been an artist in residence at both the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vt., and Pouch Cove in St. John's, Newfoundland. He is a member of the Society of Canadian Artists, the Chicago Artists Coalition and the Northern Vermont Artists Association. Addis has shown widely and his numerous awards include the SOHO International Juried Art Competition, as well as the Whitewater Annual Art Competition.
