Landscapes offer a window into nature
Beacon Fine Arts Gallery in Red Bank is hosting an exhibition of landscape paintings by nationally acclaimed artist Scott Addis.

"A Good Place"
Addis was born and raised in a small town outside of Pittsburgh in rural Pennsylvania and grew to love nature from a very young age.

His first teacher was his father, who spent hours sketching and drawing with him, both in nature and from pictures taken around their mountain home.

As he grew older, he outgrew the small town and Addis ventured out on his own. He enlisted in the Navy and experienced different countries and landscapes, then settled in Cincinnati. There he took classes in drawing and composition at the University of Cincinnati and taught himself to paint. He also made his professional debut in one of the oldest, most established galleries in the region, Closson's.

In an artist's statement, Addis, who currently lives in Montreal, provides insight:

"My paintings are an expression of mood or emotion within a design that allows a window in for people to see what they want or need to see.

"Thompson Island"
Whether the work is moody - angry or brooding - joyful or exciting - restive or peaceful - the colors and brushwork allow me as an artist tools to both experience and express what I am feeling. These feelings come on strong, are hard even to experience and only a glimpse of them can be translated onto the canvas."

He continues, "The more specific the subject matter, the smaller the window of common experience that is shared."

Addis has shown extensively across North America, including galleries in Montreal, Provincetown, Chicago, Boston,

Toronto and New York City and has been an artist in residence at both the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vt., and Pouch Cove in St. John's, Newfoundland. He is a member of the Society of Canadian Artists, the Chicago Artists Coalition and the Northern Vermont Artists Association. Addis has shown widely and his numerous awards include the SOHO International Juried Art Competition, as well as the Whitewater Annual Art Competition.

Beacon Fine Arts Gallery is located at 61 Monmouth St. Hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday by appointment, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday 1-6 p.m.
