Roadwork begins on Little Silver Point Road
BY MELISSA KARSH Staff Writer

LITTLE SILVER - Roadwork began last week on the portion of Little Silver Point Road extending from Seven Bridges Road to the Shrewsbury River.

The project, which is part of the 2007 Roadway Improvement Program, includes paving, curbing and drainage and repaving the Little Silver Women's Club lot located at 111 Church St.

Despite concerns raised about the lowest bidder by council members during the workshop portion before the meeting, the Borough Council awarded A. Montone Construction Inc. of Holmdel a contract for $299,837 for the work at the Oct. 1 council meeting.

"I think it was a matter that they don't know them, we've never used them before and there were some issues that were raised by other bidders," said Borough Administrator Michael Biehl about council members' concerns.

The second-lowest bidder was Fernandes Construction Inc. of South River at $299,946.

Biehl said, "I was down there and they seem to be moving along alright. I mean, we're watching but we always try and do that and I have the residents. If there are issues with the residents, they don't hesitate to call."

The road will remain open while the work is being done and the construction company has 60 days to complete the project under the terms of the contract.

"They are working [from] side to side so the road stays open," said Biehl.

This means that the construction company will work on one side of the road first and then move to the other side so traffic can still pass.

Biehl added that he is hopeful the roadwork will not take the entire 60 days allotted.
