'Persistence of Genocide' at Brookdale Dec. 6, 7

The New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education and The Center for Holocaust Studies at Brookdale Community College will present "The Persistence of Genocide: A Century of Human Destruction," a conference designed to train teachers to educate students on the atrocities of genocide.

A viewing of the film "The Devil Came on Horseback: Bearing Witness to the Genocide in Darfur," with a speaker will be Dec. 6 from 7:30-9 p.m., and workshops and two general assembly speakers on Dec. 7 from 8 a.m.-3:15 p.m. at Warner student life center. The film exposes the tragedy in Darfur as seen by former U.S. Marine Capt. Brian Steidel. He served as an unarmed monitor in 2004 with the African Union in Darfur. Steidel will provide a morning keynote address at the conference Dec. 7, and John Heffernan, Genocide Prevention Initiative director, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Washington, D.C., the afternoon speaker.

The workshops are: "The Role of Technology in Communicating the History of the Holocaust and Genocide," "Teachers in the Third Reich: Implications for The Teaching Profession," "Rwanda: The Bystander Effect," "The Use of Survivor Testimony in the Classroom," "Doctors Without Borders: Providing Aid to Areas for Conflict," "Lesson Study: Other Victims of the Holocaust," "Student Activism: Implementing School Wide Initiatives," and "Resistance: Concepts and Practices in Extremis."
