      Memorial Day a somber day for mourning
            Once again, as Memorial Day approaches, we are still engaged in combat situations in Iraq and Afghanistan. For better or worse, it's a war on global terrorism, with no end in sight. Whether you're for or against the war, it matters not; our armed forces are serving in harm's way, which brings even more meaning to Memorial Day.

      Stop bridge project, and conduct investigation
            We have the utmost respect for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the World War I Doughboy monument. We are happy that it is out of harm's way, in a safe place in the VFW backyard, where a watchful eye will be upon it as the NJDOT proceeds with their plans to erect the fixed span bridge, replacing the Highlands drawbridge.
