      Fort Monmouth is still needed
            I t is a shame that they are letting Fort Monmouth go. It is unfair to make New Jersey suffer, with all the people that need the fort. A lot of retired military are living in Monmouth County that need medical, commissary, craft center and other services offered by Fort Monmouth. Lots of men need the job they have, and they don't want to leave their families and homes.

      Views will still be present from new Highlands bridge
            I n the debate over replacing the Highlands-Sea Bright bridge, I haven't seen any discussion (I might just have missed it) about a fixed span being more energy-efficient than a drawbridge. I think NJ DOT says they prefer fixed spans for their lower operation and maintenance costs.

      Owners warned to keep pets safe from thieves
            Members of the Domestic Companion Animal Council have seen an alarming rise in dog thefts in recent months and warn pet owners to be vigilant. In the first three months of 2008, the American Kennel Club has tracked more than 30 thefts from news and customer reports, versus only 10 for all of 2007.

            Nearly 21 million adults and children in the United States have diabetes, one of the nation's most debilitating and deadly diseases. Each year, it costs the United States more than $174 billion and an estimated $5.8 billion in New Jersey alone.

      Sin tax should exclude healthful fast-food items
            If passed, the proposed "sin tax" on fast food - which is intended to help raise money for local hospitals - really should exclude healthy vegetarian items, including the BK veggie burger. Vegetarian foods are far less likely to land people in the hospital with heart disease, strokes, certain cancers, diabetes and other dietrelated diseases.
