Family of EMT thanks public for outpouring of concern

As many readers may already know, Ed Ryan, EMT, was responding to a first aid call when he was struck by a car on Main Street, Oceanport. He broke bones in his lower right leg, two ribs and right shoulder. He was rushed to Jersey Shore Trauma Center and underwent surgery to place a rod in his leg. Further testing showed extensive damage to his shoulder bones, tendons, and muscle, requiring a lengthy surgery to repair.

The rod in his right leg is healing nicely. He is not allowed to put weight on it just yet, only toe-touch to the floor. The surgery on his right shoulder went well, and he has an elaborate brace that holds his arm out to the side. He's only allowed to move his wrist, hand and fingers for now. He'll be working in therapy to move his arm from the elbow down until the shoulder heals enough to start therapy on that.

Ed has come a long way — he is still in pain, but is in good spirits, thanks to all the visits and phone calls. He has been transferred from Jersey Shore to Riverview Medical Center rehab where he is undergoing therapy for both his leg and his shoulder. He has a long way to go, but he has many people supporting him. Most of all, he misses responding to others' call for assistance as an EMT in both Oceanport and Little Silver.

We would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers through this troubling time.
