NJBS appeals to public to donate blood

With area hospitals experiencing a 15 percent deficit in the blood supply, New Jersey Blood Services (NJBS) is urging all eligible persons to donate at a local drive.

Blood supplies have dropped below the five-day safety level and the need for Rh negative red cells has become a critical concern. Compounding the shortage is the effect of the corporate environment — about 50 percent of blood donated in the state comes from corporate blood donors, and downsizing has negatively affected the supply. Eligible donors should be 17 years of age, weigh 110 pounds, and be in generally good health. Donors must present photo or signed ID and know their Social Security number. Donors over 75 years of age can also keep donating with their physician's note.
