Suspect in R.B. stabbing charged

RED BANK — Borough resident Jorge Vargas-Mancilla is in police custody in connection with a stabbing incident outside the Red Bank Primary School on Dec. 3.

He is being charged with attempted murder, possession of an unlawful weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

According to the Red Bank Police Department, no schoolchildren were involved or were present during the incident.

The school went into a lockdown for approximately one hour after the stabbing, which occurred at about 9 a.m.

Police said the victim in the domestic violence incident was taken to Riverview Medical Center for treatment

All of the schoolchildren and employees of the school were safe and resumed their normal school day.

Superintendent of Schools Laura Morana sent a letter to parents, guardians and the community in response to the incident.

"As you may have heard, earlier today a domestic dispute occurred on the grounds of our Primary School. The incident did not affect any of our faculty/staff or students. However, it impacted one of our students' families. As you can imagine, we are saddened by this event," Morana said.

"Our school-crisis team was available all day to talk to our children and staff members to answer any questions that they may have had. The school schedule was not disrupted, students enjoyed outdoor recess, and they have followed a regular school day."

If your child experiences unresolved feelings that he/she would like to discuss with you, you can help your child by listening carefully, not overreacting, accepting his/her feelings, and answering questions honestly according to your beliefs.

"Our Guidance Department is prepared and dedicated to helping our students through any problems. However, when a problem requires the expertise of an outside agency, our counselors can help you contact the available resources," she said.
