      Maple Place School tops in class for hunger challenge

      Maple Place students at the awards ceremony Maple Place students at the awards ceremony OCEANPORT — Maple Place Middle School in Oceanport placed first in the Intermediate School Division II in the Holiday Hunger Challenge sponsored by the Food- Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

      Students at the school collected more than 650 pounds of food to donate to the Holiday Hunger Challenge. The 67 schools participating in the event were placed into four divisions based on school population. More than 54,000 pounds of food were collected through the food drive, more than double last year's contributions.

      Winners were announced Dec. 3 at an awards ceremony.

      Based in Neptune, the FoodBank secures and distributes 3.7 million pounds of donated food to a network of 270 emergency hunger relief agencies in Monmouth and Ocean counties, including emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, day care centers and shelters, as well as other hunger relief agencies.
