Arts council grants $124K to local groups

RED BANK — The Monmouth County Arts Council announced its Local Arts Program Grant awards for fiscal year 2009.

The grants will result in over 1,000 highquality, low-cost arts events, including art exhibitions, concerts, dance, theater, film and festivals throughout Monmouth County for children and adults.

Forty groups submitted grants requesting a total of $668,226. Thirty-five were awarded grants totaling $124,500.

According to Executive Director Mary Eileen Fouratt, "The mission of MCAC is to enrich the community by inspiring and fostering the arts. I can't think of a more important way to do this than to support those arts organizations and the passionate and talented people who bring wonderful arts events to the residents of Monmouth County. Especially in these times, we all benefit by having great art experiences close to home that are often free or very low cost, thanks to support from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. The arts lift our spirits, bring people together and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. "

A record number of organizations went through a competitive grant process to receive the awards. A panel of arts experts reviewed the grants and made recommendations that were approved by the MCAC board of trustees.

Recommendations were based on criteria including artistic excellence, broad public benefit, accessibility to the public, commitment to lifelong learning in the arts, accountability, and financial soundness with broad support. Funds for the grant come through the Local Arts Program of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

The grants include General Operating Support (GOS) for arts organizations; General Program Support (GPS) for other types of nonprofit organizations that have significant arts programs; Special Project Support (SP) for all types of nonprofit organizations; and Technical Assistance (TA).

A limited number of mini-grants of $500 are still available in 2009 for nonprofit organizations for arts programs. For further information on eligibility and criteria, go to www.monmoutharts.org.
