Make an eco-friendly New Year's resolution A variety of ways exist to reduce individual utilization of Earth's natural resources. Taking shorter showers is an easy way to save water and the installation of low-flow showerheads conserve water by up to 50 percent, while obviously cutting the water bill in half. Electricity can be saved by simply unplugging appliances when they are not in use. When appliances are left plugged in they are still leaking energy, whether they are on or off. And yes, that includes phone chargers! Another great way to save energy is to not drive whenever possible. Walking to the store is not a novel concept and yet New Jersey roads are constantly congested with cars, many of which are traveling very short distances. By walking instead of driving, the air not only benefits but so do you. This final tip is targeted to all those who insist on buying gas-guzzling SUVs. In most circumstances it is unreasonable for these huge vehicles to be operated, especially when only one person is in the car at a time. These automobiles are responsible for an enormous amount of air pollution and receive very few miles to the gallon. If buying or leasing a car this year, think rationally and invest in one that is environmentally friendly. When making your 2008 resolution, think small to make a big impact and do something that will help everyone. By becoming sustainable in our everyday lifestyle, perhaps this coming year will be filled with positive environmental changes. Tori Nasoff Hazlet |
