Architects redefining 'architecture'

Mirai Morita
The Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts in LongBranch is kicking off the newyear with an exhibition that brings together an impressive ensemble of architectural talentswho are redefining their field.

"Architects without Architecture" will run through Feb. 22 at SICA, 20 ThirdAve.

Noting that the recent output of many architects today is growing further fromwhatmany would consider to be traditional architecture, curator TrentWelcome has chosen to illustrate that observation through "Architects withoutArchitecture."He has assembled some of the top names in the field who are pushing the boundaries and the very definition of architecture.

This collection of art works is produced by Ball-Nogus Studio, Joe Day, Form:uLA, Steve Fuchs, Moira Henry, Mark Johnson, LA Patterns, Mirai Morita, Roberto Paz, Nicholas Pisca of Gehry Technologies, Phat Studio and Florencia Pita.

Ina curatorial statement,Welcome explains: "In our contemporary environment there can be found newly emerging concepts, contexts and techniques that are changing the traditional output of architecture. This new territory is allowing architects to occupy newspaces and produce a widening array of products that are challenging the basic ideologies of this age-old profession. It is here we must ask, then, what are 'architects without architecture?'"

SICA's mission is to increase the general public's accessibility, awareness and appreciation of the contemporary arts in central New Jersey. The gallery is open Wednesday and Thursday 1-5 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 1-5 p.m. Visit www.sica.org or call (732) 263-1121.
