S.B. police bust up underage drinking party
BY MELISSA KARSH Staff Writer

SEA BRIGHT - About 19 juveniles were taken into police custody for underage drinking at a party when police responded to a disturbance complaint on Ocean Avenue in Sea Bright, according to Sea Bright Police Chief William S. Moore.

Moore said when officers arrived on the scene March 14 at 10 p.m. numerous individuals who appeared to be under the legal drinking age began to hide cans of beer from police.

Police also charged Daniel Cleary, 21 of Eatontown, and Kevin O'Shaughnessy, who lives in the apartment, for providing alcohol to minors.

"We're very active in breaking up parties," said Moore. "Most of the time we find them on the beach. This is the first arrest of the year for underage drinking and providing alcohol to minors."

O'Shaughnessy, 18, was also charged with possession under the legal age, said Moore.

He said all the juveniles, who ranged in ages 15 to 18, were released into the custody of their parents and all of their charges were forwarded to the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office Juvenile Division.

Three other party-goers who were all charged criminally with underage possession since they were 18 years old or over, according to Moore, who said this was one of the largest busts of a group of people drinking underage in the borough in a long time.

He said in 2007 there were a total of 77 people charged with drinking offenses in the borough, including providing alcohol to minors and possession under the legal age. In 2006 there were about 54 people charged and in 2005 a total of 26 people were charged, said Moore.

He said the trend generally spikes in the borough in the summer months.

Officers from Monmouth Beach, Highlands and Rumson also assisted in the investigation.
