Borough man faces attempted murder charge

RED BANK - A 28-year-old female resident was stabbed in the throat May 6 at 5:28 a.m., according to Red Bank police.

The victim was stabbed at the Spring Street residence of Jhonny Campos, 29, who is the accused attacker, according to police.

Campos has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, according to police.

Red Bank police were dispatched to the Spring Street residence. Upon arrival, the responding officers found the victim, a Bridge Avenue resident, standing on the front lawn bleeding from the throat. She was being attended by other residents, according to a police press release.

The victim led police to Campos, who was found inside his Spring Street residence with a serious wound to his wrist, according to the release.

The victim was transported to RiverviewMedical Center by patrol units. Campos was transported to Riverview Medical Center by Red Bank First Aid units and Red Bank police officers.

Investigation by Sgt. Michael Frazee and Detective Robert Clayton led police to believe that the victim and the accused are acquainted and the victim had traveled to Campos' home that day, according to police.

While there, the victim and Campos became involved in a dispute. During that dispute, police said, Campos allegedly picked up a knife, held the victim by the face and cut her across the throat, according to police.

The victim was able to free herself from Campos and fled to neighboring residences, banging on the doors and asking that they call the police, according to the release.

After the victim fled, police said they believe Campos suffered self-inflicted wounds to his wrist.

Bail has been set by state Superior Court Judge Paul Chaiet at $300,000, according to the press release.

Campos remains at Riverview Medical Center, under police custody while he is being treated, police said.

The victim was treated and released from Riverview Medical Center.
