The 2009 Rebel Indoor Shot Put Series got off to a record-setting start.
Brick Township's Lisa Stuto set a new meet record in the Senior Girls division with a heave of 39-7. Runner-up Shannon Watt of Jackson Memorial (39-5) also topped the old record of 38-0 by Anna Di- Paolo of Howell. Third-place finisher Sandra Jean Romain of Old Bridge was not far off the old record with her 37-8½.
Tilah Young of Barnegat won the Junior Girls competition with a throw of 32-5. East Brunswick's Corine Kominkiewiczz (31-6) and Franklin's Diane Jones (30-4) were second and third.
Franklin's Nitosa Brooks won the Sophomore Girls competition at 32-6. Second was Diana Lawerence of Old Bridge (30-3) and third was Katie Brunner of Brick Township (29-7).
Freshman winner was East Brunswick's Connine Kominkiewicz (27-5). Kayla Mazza of Raritan was second (27-0), and Metuchen's Egypt Pringley-Mack was third (24-4).
The best throw of the competition belonged to Old Bridge's Jorge Merino who captured the Senior Boys competition with a 53-11¼ toss. A.J. Wondolowski (47-11¼) and Alex Giglio of Jackson Liberty (45-3¾) were second and third.
Adam Skidmore led a one-two Central Regional finish in the Junior Boys competition. Skidmore's 49-2½ topped his teammate Matt Keifer's 45-11¾. Third place went to Howell's Sean Harvey (45-1½).
Host Howell picked up a win in the Sophomore Boys competition with Eric Snyder edging Long Branch's Doug Saffioti, 38-6 to 38-2.
The Freshman Boys winner was Albie Labignara of Central Regional (34-1½). Jackson Memorial's John Delaney (33- 11½) and Old Bridge's Ramy Kased (32-4) were place and show finishers.
The Rebel Indoor Series continues tonight starting at 6:30 with sign-in at 6.
Monmouth running back David Sinisi has recently been named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Football Championship Subdivision All-Star Team.
Sinisi finished the regular season tied for first in the nation in points and touchdowns, with 22 in 11 games. He was also the FCS' second leading rusher, ending with 1,674 yards en route to demolishing the MU record books. The 2008 NEC Offensive Player of the Year selection was second in the NCAA (FCS level) with 152.8 yards per game. He was also a Third Team Associated Press All-American, the first Monmouth offensive player to earn a spot among the nation's best.
Sinisi was one of four players from the Northeast Conference to be named to the All-Star Team, and one of two running backs on the list.
The ECAC will honor the players and rookies of the year in each division and region on February 24, 2009 at the annual Eastern College Football Awards Banquet presented by FieldTurf Tarkett, an event held in the Pegasus Restaurant at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, N.J.
Sinisi also picked up a pair of honorable mention All-America nods by the College Sporting News and The Sports Network. Tight end John Nalbone was also a CSN honorable mention All-American.
Monmouth University's women's track and field team claimed fourth place at the Delaware Invitational, the first indoor meet of the new year.
The Hawks were edged out by Navy, Delaware State and Delaware, but the Hawks' 121 team points was better than seven other teams including Millersville, Swarthmore, West Chester, Villanova and Saint Joseph's.
Junior Michele Losey (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) won the 500m in a time of 1:19, while taking second in the 200m (25.83). Freshman Lindsay Walsh (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) was second in the high jump, while Crystal Stein (Stewartstown, Pa./Susquehannock) also took home a silver medal, in the 400m. Stein also took home sixth in the 800m for the Hawks.
Marykate Walsh (Woodbury, N.J./Woodbury) placed fourth in the long jump, while the 4x400 relay team of Colleen Rutecki (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), Ajda Dotday (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne), Sarah Simmons (East Kingston, Pa./Exeter) and Shannon Rogers (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) crossed the tape in fourth place.
Dotday, a freshman, also had a pair of fourth place individual finishes, in the 200m (26.48) and in the 60m (8.00). Senior Laura Meyer's (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) pole vault of 10'4" was the fourth best performance of the evening. Lindsay Walsh also tallied a fifth place long jump performance.
Senior Kelly Dantley (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) was fifth in the high jump, with junior Brittany Gibbs (Old Bridge, N.J./Matawan) also taking home fifth place in the 500m.
Rutecki also scored for Monmouth in the 500m, taking sixth place. Senior Illiana Blackshear (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) was sixth in the 400m and Christine Altland (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) was sixth in the mile. A pair of freshmen turned in sixth place finishes to round out the night for MU, with Symmone Fisher's (Coram, N.Y./Longwood) throw of 43' 5" in the weight throw and Michelle Telofsky's pole vault.
